Delisle’s history

Delisle began on the Old Bone Trail, and its name comes from the DeLisle family. Lenora DeLisle and her four sons, Amos, Fred, Ed and Eugene, came from North Dakota in 1903 and homesteaded about three miles south of where the town stands today.

In 1908 the Canadian Northern Railway built its line from Saskatoon to Calgary, and the settlement to the south moved to the new townsite beside the tracks. The town was named after the brothers on 29 December 1908, and Delisle became an official town in 1913.

Today the town, southwest of Saskatoon on Highway 7, has a cenotaph in front of the old hospital bearing the names of local people who died in the two world wars; it was refurbished and rededicated in 2002. Delisle's high school is one of the largest in the Prairie Spirit School Division, drawing students from nearby villages and farms, and its Rebels football team has won several provincial titles. The town is also home to the Valleyview Golf Course, was the setting for the hockey movie Paperback Hero, and is the hometown of Hockey Hall of Famers Doug and Max Bentley.
